Story Behind the Image

This photograph was captured in historic Trinidad, Cuba in 1948.

Taken from the bell tower of the Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi, the view through the arch rises away from the town center and reveals a scattering of houses up the tropical hillside.

And at the top you can see a large white building, the old Ermita de La Popa, which was a convent and hospital in the 1700 and 1800s. Now, however, the structure is in ruins, with only the facade barely standing.

Today, you can still climb the bell tower in Trinidad, but the view has changed. This photograph offers a rare snapshot of the Spanish colonial city as it looked almost 80 years ago.
