Welcome to Atlantic & Havana

Inspired to stir the imagination

Art and photography from Old Cuba and the Transatlantic world

Adela De Zaldo at the De Zaldo family door in Cádiz

I’m Adela De Zaldo.

I started researching stories about Cuba because I had always been so far from it all.

My parents were both born in Havana in the late 1920s, yet growing up I rarely saw my Cuban family and heard little about their lives.

Instead, I visualized my mother’s charming and wistful tales about her childhood in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood.

Those vague recollections my mother offered eventually inspired me to learn more - both about my close relatives and the more distant family journeys, to and from Cuba, that no one in my life could describe.

Atlantic & Havana has evolved as a collection of the art I imagine my ancestors might have shared – art that I now love and wish to share with you.

Inspired to stir the imagination

Images from the past provide a wonderful way to visualize and piece together events through time.

They are a glimpse into former worlds and may even awaken a feeling we once knew.

As I became intrigued by my family’s journeys that criss-crossed the Atlantic over three centuries, I turned to art and old photographs to imagine these travels and perspectives.

And as I discovered the stories of people in generations before me, images are what helped bring my past into view.

The original photographs and period fine art at Atlantic & Havana are inspired by those stories and journeys, those eras and places.

Perhaps the beautiful art you find in our collections will evoke your fond memories: of travel, of your own adventures, and of the people in your past.

Stories From Our Collectors

Beautiful old photograph with nice watercolor paper. Reminds me of my trip to Cuba in 2017, but this photo shows Trinidad in another time. Great details.

Helen, Naperville

This 1950s Cuba photograph works so well with my mid-century decor. And the image by the beach, with shadows of the woman and round table - just gorgeous.
