Unusual photograph of Trinidad’s bell tower taken in 1948. The striking image is of a historic landmark that is framed in a high-contrast and modern, graphic style.
Story Behind the Image
The Spanish colonial city of Trinidad, Cuba, is known for its historic landmarks and beautiful old buildings. That’s why it was selected in the 1980s as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Trinidad's most recognized architectural feature is the bell tower of the Convento de San Francisco. The tall white structure is visible while walking through the old town center, and for miles around from the surrounding valley, or Valle de los Ingenios.
Yet this photograph captures an unusual view of the tower.
It was taken in the 1940s from inside a neighboring building and appears to rise up behind the wooden shutter of a centuries-old window.
The photograph is also striking because of the half-tone effect - the original dotted print process - that creates the impression with textures of light and dark.
