Story Behind the Art
This a stunning view of a tropical sunset.
But instead of looking out over the ocean, it's a vista up a gentle hillside at a finca, or country estate, in the Havana province.
I imagine it was a tranquil spot, with soft sounds from a gentle wind. Yet, there's such drama in the sky, the waving palm trees profiled against clouds that burst in the day's ending light.
My father was easily drawn to this sunset, and he captured the moment in the late 1940s. The Cuban finca has surely changed, but those breezy sunsets must still be sensational.
